Wow...um. Huh. Just read an Alan Ball interview where he discussed that the Charlaine Harris books were all about Sookie/Bill and any other characters are secondary to their story. Huh. I didn't get that at all. Not sure what to say since he obviously loves their storyline and there's no way around that. If we ever get a "triangle" or an Eric/Sookie moment, it'll merely be part of the Bill/Sookie story. In a way, it's good to know that now and at least he isn't lying to us about the show exploring all options.

Maybe after the lastest book his perspective is not wrong. Sure, there are books where Bill is almost entirely absent but, heck, it could still be all about Bill/Sookie if Charlaine Harris intended for every other suitor in the series to lead Sookie back to her first and truest love *vomits*. I say this because I read the most recent book with this constant feeling of inevitable doom. I can hardly be irritated that the show is erasing Eric when it seems that's about to happen in the books too from this girl's perspective. Hopefully I'm just being cynical but here are my thoughts from the pretty disappointing Dead and Gone. Here be spoilers and lots of waffles!!! )

Okay how to do this without saying anything spoilery? (Warning....book spoilers)

Show Eric is nothing like Book Eric.

Don't get me wrong, I like Show Eric. But he's more like Sark than Eric to me. I like him on the show because he's bad and knows it and shows it in an understated, kinetic way. Plus, he's nordic and dangerous and that's never bad when you look like Alexander. But you know what? As much as Alexander is perfect for the role - he isn't WRITTEN like Eric. This is exactly how I felt regarding Michelle Monaghan in Gone Baby Gone. Perfect casting, great story, overall good movie - but WTF with the written characterisaion of Angie Gennao????

Facts they've brought up regarding Eric's everyday life contradict book canon blatantly, especially his commentary on mainstreaming which is a very central struggle in Eric's personal arc. The blatant ruthlessness from the show versus a desire to blend and work with society. That powerful struggle is being nixed on the show. This is startling to me because he's barely even been on the show. The more mainstreaming comes up in conversation, the more annoyed I get. Plus, when I see comments from Alan Ball like this:

Eric is a 1,000-year-old vampire who is from Scandinavia somewhere. He was a Viking that came to America about 1,000 years ago, and was made a vampire, either on the voyage over, or once he landed in America. He is a huge character in the series. He is definitely a big part of the show. He’s a series regular.

Say it with me...what. the. hell. )

Eric icon batch.

I wanted to do some more icons focusing on the later part but I am iconed out. Maybe some other time. Most of these are animated, hence it may seem like I've posted the same one twice but it's merely in different sizes (if you want an animatd icon make sure you get the right size if your account only lets you load those going up to 40k).

True Blood 1.04 - Escape From Dragon House
53 icons batch of the Eric scene, largely Eric but with a couple of Pam because she's awesome. There's also some Pam/Eric and Eric/Sookie. Most of these are animated but I threw in the occasional still.

Preview:

If you want them you can take them, just please let me know which ones you are taking and DO credit [info]polarthestral. Please do not hotlink. Enjoy!

Aren't you sweet? )

True Blood 1.04 - Escape From Dragon House

October 8th, 2008 (02:46 pm)

I think I have to accept the fact I'll see every TB episode after the next one has already aired. Which limits discussions. Oh well, I guess this really will be my no-wank fandom. I'll probably miss the wank during the happy-squee period of the new show. Oh well, I'll squee for Eric on my own while everyone else laments the lack of Eric in the next one. lol

I am trying my best to not spoil people on the books but since I've just read them and this first series is following the first book pretty closely, it's hard not to compare and wonder why they've made certain changes. Especially when the books are so fresh to me.

I am warning you now THERE ARE BOOK SPOILERS IN THIS POST. Don't say you weren't warned. Most points are only about the show. However, I do raise several questions about certain minor scene changes. Thus, they're not necessarily spoilery considering you already know basically what happens in the novel. But there are a couple of things that I can't help but know and I'm not going to pretend ignorance when I discuss a character, especially given that characters behaviour in this episode. Thus there are one or two genuine spoilers for the later books below. Read at your own risk, these spoilers won't necessarily occur on the show (one of them at least) but there were elements in this episode that struck a chord with those "spoilers" and I had to ask....

That warning couldn't be any longer and any more boring so if you say 'boo spoilers' to me *smack* Not that anyone will probably read this at this late stage. lol

Barking my head off at the moment, which is distracting me from watching the Eric scene over and over again. Mmmm, Eric.

Too bad all signs point that he won't get the girl, but that's okay, more Eric for me :) *pets* I will make some Eric icons because it's wrong I made Bill/Sookie icons and haven't made some Eric yet.

True Blood 1x04 - Eric's Scene

October 5th, 2008 (03:58 am)

Alexander Skarsgård is one of the best examples of casting I've seen of a character from a book since Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy.

Could not resist finding the Eric scene to watch, given the slowass TB downloads. MMMMM, Eric. )
